Research
Goals of the research conducted at the Center
The Center pursues research into the etiology and pathogenesis of the mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and is engaged in the development of techniques for the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, radiation treatment, medical treatment, combination and multimodality treatment of malignant tumors in adults and children.
The translational research activities of the Center are focused on:
- studying the mechanisms of carcinogenesis; studying the role of external and internal causes of malignant neoplasms and finding the ways of preventing tumors based on the study of their causes,
- analyzing biochemical, molecular and immunologic factors that allow to assess the risk of formation of tumors and their progression,
- developing and implementing into practice high-tech techniques based on the latest innovations in science, and combination use of standard and new therapies to treat malignant tumors,
- studying and implementing into practice new medications and techniques that improve tolerance to antineoplastic therapy, reduce its toxicity, and enhance the quality of life of cancer patients,
- improving organ sparing surgery techniques and plastic surgery techniques to enhance the quality of life of cancer patients, without any detriment to the radicality of surgical therapy,
- improving biotherapies of solid tumors,
- improving the methods for adequate evaluation and proper planning of the activities of the national cancer service by analyzing the rates of cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality, as well as demographic patterns of development of malignant tumors, and by predicting the future trends in relation to these rates, using the existing hospital-based cancer registries and population-based cancer registries.
