Radionuclide imaging in nephrology and urology
Types of tests: Dynamic nephroscintigraphy.
Aim: To determine the functional status of the kidneys.
Indications:
- To assess the function of the kidneys before planned surgery or chemotherapy.
- To prepare for a kidney transplant.
- To assess the viability of the kidneys after an organ-preserving surgery or transplant (Fig. 11).
- To assess the viability of ectopic renal tissue.
- To identify vesicoureteral reflux.
Imaging agent: Tc99m-MAG3, Tc99m-DTPA
Principles: The test is performed after the imaging agent is injected in the basilic vein. Images of the kidneys are taken continuously for at least 20 minutes. The obtained functional information is analyzed by a special software program that builds an ‘activity v. time’ graph and allows assessment of the filtrating (secreting) and excreting function of the kidneys.
Preparation: No special preparation is necessary. It is recommended to drink 0.5-1 l of water before the test.
