The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization.
The objective of the IARC is to promote international collaboration in cancer research.
IARC’s mission:
- coordinating and conducting clinical trials across countries and studying the etiology of cancers;
- planning and supervising scientific research in the field of oncology (translational research, treatment and prevention of cancers);
- developing science strategies of fight against cancer;
- educating and training professionals in oncology;
- participating in epidemiological and laboratory studies;
- disseminating scientific information via publications, conferences and grants;
- publishing monographs on current issues in oncology.
IARC was created in 1965 by a resolution of the 18th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization.
The first members were the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, the UK and the USA.
Today, IARC’s membership has grown to 22 countries.
