International Partnerships

Since its establishment the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology has been actively studying, adopting, adapting and introducing into the clinical practice the cutting-edge research of international cancer centers, and has engaged leading international oncologists to pursue cooperative research.

Already in the 1920s the Center managed to build partnerships with the major European radiation therapy centers – the Curie Institute in Paris and Radiumhemmet in Stockholm. These relationships made it possible to start using the then-novel methods of radiation treatment of malignant tumors, i.e. curietherapy with radium sources and roentgenotherapy, at the Center in 1928.

The Center’s research in the field of basic sciences, such as the investigation of carcinogenicity of the environment, food stuffs, tobacco and products of industry, which has been conducted since the 1950s, has placed the Center on a par with the leading international research centers.

The results of the research conducted at the Center have long sparked the interest of the global scientific community – for the first time the Center’s researchers presented their findings at the Seventh International Cancer Congress in London in 1958. In 1987 Nikolai P. Napalkov, who headed the research activities at the Center since 1963, was appointed Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization.

The Center is fully integrated into the global community of scientists and oncologists.

In 2018 the Center was the first Russian healthcare institution that was included in the register of cancer centers certified by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology.

In the same year the Center signed a memorandum on cooperation with the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association.

The specialists of the Center are regular speakers and participants of international forums and congresses. They undergo training programs at leading international cancer centers and teach master classes, and research-to-practice seminars to specialists from other countries.
